Michigan issues first recreational marijuana business licenses

ANN ARBOR, MI -- In a couple weeks, residents 21 and up will be able to walk into a store and purchase marijuana, a plant that’s long been illegal in Michigan and that remains illegal federally.

Michigan on Tuesday, for the first time ever, sanctioned the commercial sale of marijuana beginning Dec 1.

At AgraPharm LLC’s warehouse in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, the scent of cannabis is potent.

“What you're smelling today is about only a third of what it really smells like when we first harvest the crop,” said AgraPharm’s CEO Ed Santillan.

The hemp drying inside was harvested in October. There are rows and rows of it, stalks as big as eight feet long, hanging from orange plastic netting secured to the ceiling.

Leaders from around Florida met Tuesday afternoon to discuss the state’s budding industry: cannabis.

Fifty influential leaders from the state discussed the growing concern over medical marijuana at the Florida Priorities Summit on Tuesday at the University of Miami.

Florida is one of 33 states where residents can legally purchase medical marijuana after obtaining a card from a doctor. Ten cannabis dispensaries opened in Alachua County over the last two years.
