At AgraPharm LLC’s warehouse in Beaver County, the scent of cannabis is potent.

“What you're smelling today is about only a third of what it really smells like when we first harvest the crop,” said AgraPharm’s CEO Ed Santillan.

The hemp drying inside was harvested about two weeks ago. There are rows and rows of it, stalks as much as 8 feet long, hanging from orange plastic netting secured to the ceiling.

Although often considered a weed, cannabis has many needs that growers must accommodate. Majoring in Marijuana: Pharmacy school launches first medical cannabis master's program

This fall the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy launched the first program in the country to offer a master's degree in medical cannabis and therapeutics.

"There is a significant need for medical cannabis education," said Dr. Natalie Eddington, who is the dean and teaches several courses within the online curriculum.

CALIFORNIA | Authorities Seize More Than $1.5 Billion In Illegal Marijuana

California authorities announced they seized more than $1.5 billion worth of illegal marijuana in fiscal year 2019, or the rough equivalent of the state's legal market for cannabis.

More than 953,000 plants were seized from 345 raided grow sites around the state. Authorities arrested 148 people and confiscated 168 weapons under California's Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, or CAMP program.

The value of the seizures was based on the estimated wholesale price of $1,600 per plant.

USDA suggests farmers pay hemp-promotions fee, offers no more details on rule changes

The agency setting baseline national minimums for hemp production says growers should tax themselves to promote the new crop.

A top official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Heather Pichelman, said Monday in the agency’s first address to hemp growers since releasing national regulations that the industry “has clearly shown interest” in paying fees to promote hemp.

“The idea here is that a rising tide lifts all boats,” she said.
